Among the most celebrated Westerns, this remake of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai chronicles the saga of 7 gunfighters hired to protect a small Mexican village from a group of marauding bandits. As much a star as the familiar faces (Brynner, McQueen, Wallach, Bronson, Coburn, Vaughn) is Bernstein's score, perhaps the most quoted piece of Western film music in history (and famous later for its use in TV cigarette commercials). Although he had labored in countless B pictures, this role was McQueen's breakthrough, appearing for the first time above the title.
