Writer/director James Cameron's epic film recreates the maiden (and last) voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic, interweaving entertaining characters, phenomenal visual effects, a touch of social criticism, and gorgeously detailed sets and costumes. The story is framed by the tale of a modern-day treasure seeker (Bill Paxton) looking for a priceless diamond necklace in the Titanic's submerged wreckage. He finds a nude portrait of a young woman, revealed to be the now 102-year-old survivor, Rose (Gloria Stuart). When she comes forward to claim it, she recalls her voyage on the fabled "unsinkable" liner. The film flashes back to young Rose (Kate Winslet), a wealthy socialite bound by the controlling strictures of the upper crust and her love for a penniless artist and fellow passenger (Leonardo DiCaprio). Their romance frees her physically and emotionally, even when it is interrupted by the Titanic's fatal meeting with an iceberg.
